The power of THC has increased from 2008 to 2017

New trends for American and European consumers.

There is a project that analyzes cannabis samples confiscated by law enforcement agencies with the goal of helping a number of federal agencies plan drug control and public health strategies. This program is called: Potency Monitoring Program.

Through this drug activity monitoring program, a total of 18108 samples of cannabis preparations have been analyzed over the past decade by the University of Mississippi supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Gas chromatography

This method uses a Flame Ionization Detector (CG-DIF) which is a very common analytical technique which is widely used in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical and natural gas markets. The samples used are classified as follows:

The number of samples received over the past five years has declined dramatically due to legalization for medical or recreational purposes in many states in the United States.

Spectacular results!

The results showed that the average concentration of Δ9-THC has grown dramatically over the last 10 years, passing from 8,9% to 2008 to 17,1% to 2017. The average ratio Δ9 THC: CBD also rose sharply from 23 in 2008 to 104 in 2017.

From 2008 to 2017, the proportion of samples ofhashish oil (concentrated) entered pass 0,5 to 4,7% and their concentration average of Δ9-THC passes 6,7 to 55,7%.

Other activity monitoring programs are also present in several European countries like the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the France and Italy. These programs have also documented increases in Δ9-THC concentrations and Δ9-THC: CBD ratios in cannabis.

Trends over the last decade suggest that cannabis is becoming an increasingly powerful product in the United States and Europe.

The price is also on the rise

On the other hand, there is an increase in the potency and price of cannabis in Europe from 2006 to 2016. This cross-sectional study reports that the power and price of European resin and herbal cannabis have increased between 2006 and 2016.

The potency of the resin has gone from an interval of 8,14% of THC in 2006 to 17,22% in 2016. The price of resin has passed from 8,21 euros / g to 12,27 euros / g. The resin's value increased from 11 mg THC per euro to 16,39. Varying trends in resin activity and value over time indicated minimal change from 2006 to 2011, followed by marked increases from 2011 to 2016. The potency of herbal cannabis increased from 5,00% THC to 10,22%. The price of medicinal plants has passed from 7,36 euros / g to 12,22 EUR / g. The value of herbal cannabis has not changed of 12,65 mg of THC per euro to 12,72mg.

Conclusion

We therefore notice that cannabis resin but not herbal cannabis increased the amount of THC per euro spent. The marked increase in the strength and value of resin between 2011 and 2016 is compatible with the emergence of new resin production techniques on European markets.
