Pakistan can earn $3 billion from hemp production

Pakistan's Ministry of Science produced 93 kg of hemp on a trial basis

The National Assembly's Standing Committee on Science and Technology was told on Tuesday that industrial hemp production could bring Pakistan $3 billion by 2026 and help the country diversify its exports by tapping into the international market. cannabis.

The value of hemp products in the international market is $45 billion and is expected to reach $100 billion by 2026.

In a meeting held under the chairmanship of Sajid Mehdi, the committee was informed that 93kg of hemp were produced in collaboration with Arid Agriculture University as a trial for the approval of hemp policy, of which 73 kg were sent to Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Laboratories.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology has declared that a CISP lab was trying to extract the CBD oil from the hemp produced. Similarly, 20 kg of hemp was sent to the National Textile University (NTU) to be processed into fibers.

The committee ordered strict measures in order to eliminate the chances of drug mafia involvement, as their offer might be more attractive than the government price.

The meeting also decided that the Industrial Hemp and Medicinal Cannabis Authority would also be established to implement this policy.

The committee reviewed the “Entrepreneurs Registration Bill, 2021” (Private Member’s Bill) and requested the ministry to arrange a meeting with the Ministry of Law and Justice to review the legislation proposed in order to remove the gaps, if any, and to present proposals at the next meeting so that the committee can consider it accordingly.

The committee was concerned that several complaints were received from employees of COMSATS, PCSIR and Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) regarding their promotions. He asked the ministry to ensure transparency in promotion criteria to avoid frustration among their employees and enable them to work more efficiently for the welfare of their departments.

The committee strongly appreciated the introduction of electric two- and three-wheeled vehicles.

The committee, however, asked the ministry to ensure the safety of the drivers before officially launching them.

Mukhtar Ahmad Malik, a member of the committee, pointed out that “favourites” were being appointed to the FSP and that promotions from the Natural Sciences Linkage Program (NSLP) were organized without the approval of the competent authority.

Ordering an investigation into this matter, the committee asked the Ministry of Science to submit a report.
