Paraguay: Government plans to include cannabis in peasant family farming

The presidential decree establishes a maximum of two hectares of production for each family at the country level.

A variety of cannabis plant, hemp, widely used in the textile, medicinal and edible industry, will be introduced in April 2020 in peasant family farming in Paraguay.

This was announced this Sunday by Rodolfo Friedmann, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock. It is expected that hemp can be grown by small producers.

"The President of the Republic has fundamentally charged us to internalize the entire chain of hemp cultivation. We are very advanced, very satisfied with the first results. We will have, God willing, a new harvest next year. " declared President

If this becomes a reality, the cultivation of this plant will be used exclusively for industrial purposes. However, we must wait for the decree of the executive power.

In Paraguay, five licenses are in the process of producing medical and industrial cannabis.

A group of entrepreneurs recently advised the National Chamber of Industrial Cannabis, a group of people who have been trying for years to move the issue forward in the country.

"We will enter the production of industrial hemp that will allow the development of family farming. This new culture will be dedicated to 100% to the people who need it most, "explained the Secretary of State.

It also allows the importation of seeds for the first technical trials at the Paraguayan Institute of Agricultural Technology (IPTA). The intention is that from April next year, conventional production can begin.

"There are interested companies. In fact, one of them is based in Paraguay. Where there is talk of getting a price to sign an agreement with producers, "he said.

Each producer will receive 10 million Guarani per hectare. The intention is to make two harvests each year. "Today, no crop in Paraguay can reduce the income of the small producer," he said.

Traceability The Minister stated that the MAG will regulate by resolution everything related to management. Senave and Senad have put in place a traceability system to control the entry, production, transport and industrialization of seeds, as well as their export.

In principle, by 2020, we are talking about 25000 families who will enter the industrial hemp. They plan to strengthen the region of San Pedro, Concepción, Paraguarí and the central department.

Regarding the license granted to companies wishing to engage in marketing, they considered that it would be regulated according to international parameters. In principle, there are two Brazilian companies and one Paraguayan.
