The Polytechnic University of Valencia develops the first non-psychoactive and legal cannabis

The Spanish company Hemp Trading, specialized in the distribution of products for the culture, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), developed the first variety of cannabis without THC with high potential in cannabigerol.

The new strain, the only one on the cannabis market, is completely legal because it contains no psychoactive components and is distinguished by its great therapeutic potential in the treatment of diseases such as Crohn's disease, colon cancer, glaucoma, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, among others.

Obtaining a strain free of THC

According to Hemp Trading's CEO, Ernesto Llosá, the project was to develop a strain that blocks certain steps in the cannabinoid biosynthesis pathway, avoiding the formation of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) while increasing the level of cannabigerol (CBG).

CBG is the mother cell of cannabis

Le CBG is the first cannabinoid that forms in the plant. Therefore, it is considered "the mother cell of cannabis because it is essential to create THC and cannabidiol (CBD). As the plant grows in the process of biosynthesis, CBG transforms into THC, CBD and other minority cannabinoids. As a result, the CBG disappears, "says researcher Salvador Soler.

Thanks to the research work of the UPV, one of the only five entities in Spain to have a license to cultivate cannabis for scientific purposes, not only THC has been eliminated, but the concentration of CBG has been eliminated. increased.

"Thanks to this development, we obtain a completely legal plant and with CBG levels greater than 15%, while the normal quantity is 0,1-0,5% "explains Llosá. "Until now, the CBG present in cannabis varieties was in minor quantities because it was mainly processed into other cannabinoids."

Revolution in the world of CBG!

CBG is the great unknown of the cannabis plant precisely because it is found in small quantities and there is little room for further research for medical purposes, as has been done for THC or the CBD. As a result of this development, CBG can be massively achieved, paving the way for large scale production in a legal manner, as well as more research to evaluate its medicinal properties.

In addition, the process of extracting CBG requires less purification than CBD. As Llosá explains, "CBD-containing plants contain a fraction of THC that must be separated and rejected in the purification process. In our case, CBG is pure without the presence of other cannabinoids, that is, we make sure that it does not contain THC. Therefore, it guarantees the absence of a psychoactive component. "

Currently, the company registers the new strain and has not yet defined its marketing process, but this plant is an innovation for the cannabis sector and a great attraction for pharmacists interested in using the medicinal properties of cannabis legally, as well as for industrial use.

Medicinal properties of cannabigerol

In general, medicinal properties CBG are similar to those of CBD. Several scientific studies indicate that CBG reduces pain, reduces inflammation that produces certain maladies like Crohn's disease, is a great inducer of sleep and has properties antidepressant.

On the other hand, CBG inhibits the growth of cancer cells, which helps slow the progression of colon cancer. In addition, CBG could be a powerful partner for the treatment of glaucoma, since it reduces intraocular pressure.
