The least known terpenes of cannabis

A quick overview of the quite unknown terpenes found in the cannabis plant: guaiol & valencene

Everyone talks about stronger, more important terpenes: beta-caryophyllene, myrcene, pinene and limonene. Yet, researchers have already discovered more than a hundred different terpenes present in cannabis. Despite the encouraging research on the capabilities of the terpenes mentioned above, wisdom tells us not to neglect the currently unknown or misunderstood terpenes. This is the case of two rising stars in the cannabis industry and terpenes: guaiol and valencene.

Rising stars in the world of terpenes

In the same way, terpenes unknowns might not have the ostentatious appeal of the best known. But, given what we know of theentourage effectthey are no less important. Let's elucidate the nature of these two terpenes, which are quite unknown in the cannabis plant.

The guaiol

When a novice cannabis user opens a jar and smells of pine, it is likely to equate the smell with pinene. It is the most famous pine fragrant terpene. The terpenoid guaiol is full of similarities with pinene. It is characteristic of popular cultures like the Harlequin and the White Widow.

Guaiacum officinale containing guaiol grows in the tropical Americas, especially in the Caribbean and Venezuela.

For clever cannabis lovers, guaiol is recognized for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. A closer look at its medicinal properties reveals that guaiol plays a key role in the spread of the anticancer components of cannabis.

In fact, a recent study in Oncotarget describes how guaiol "significantly inhibits the cell growth of non-small cell lung cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo"By encouraging cell apoptosis and increasing chemosensitivity in patients.

Valencene

The sweet, lemony scent of many cannabis strains is often attributed to limonene. One might be inclined to think that a freshly opened orange also releases valencene. In both cases, it is more likely that you feel valencene. And, the agent Orange and the Tangie are two strains of cannabis containing this precious terpene.

The chanvrine kelp (Eupatorium cannabinum) contains a high rate of valencene

Its medicinal properties are more important than its smell and flavor. In 2016, a study published in April et another published in August both revealed that valencene had protective properties for the skin.

This terpene fights against certain types of cutaneous lesions and against the melanoma induced by UV. Valencene is a promising terpenoid in the world of terpenes.

Conclusion

These two terpenes are not yet well known, but they are important for human health. As the research progresses, do not be surprised to hear about them and other unknown terpenes ...
