The smell of fall is in the air, and we're not talking about pumpkin spice. As you read this, farmers and gardeners are cutting thousands of tons of stinkweed across North America. Leafly has selected a dozen varieties, among the thousands in the database, to test and enjoy for the end of the year.

Tiny seeds sown in spring grew into large branches full of buds ripe for Halloween celebration. In 2022, we know that legal cannabis ranked as the sixth largest commercial crop in the United States. A large part of this production comes from California, and from Humboldt County, the heart of cannabis world that makes the whole world beat.

They are the descendants of the golden age of cannabis and which represents 60 billion dollars per year. They are the fruit of decades of selection and were born to resist the invincible hand of an increasingly open market.

There are a lot of new things for the indoor growing which make the difference with the outside. There are some awesome outdoor creations flooding the market, like Lemon Cherry Gelato and Gush Mints. But we are seeing a real wave of nostalgia. Blue Dream is back on top in the Western United States.

“There is no longer any room for plants that do not meet all the criteria. They must be very powerful and must have good performance, with beautiful colors. Their crystals must be visible and the flowers must be fragrant and must be smoked easily.

Glitterbom

Not all varieties are suitable for outdoors. So we're starting with a newer strain that's transitioning outdoors and shining brightly: Glitterbomb. Created by Compound Genetics during the Chris Lynch era, it comes from Grape Gas #10 x OGKB Blueberry Headband. If you like THC percentage, Glitterbomb won silver at the 2023 California State Fair Cannabis Awards for THC percentage. Grape, berry, candy and fuel smells constitute the central mass of the 2023 market, and thesedative indica hybrid goes perfectly with the pleasures of the holidays. We've seen some stunning Glitterbombs outdoors and in greenhouses, from Paradiso Gardens in Salinas to Sonoma Hills Farm in Petaluma.

“We love Glitterbomb, it’s been a huge hit with the growing community, which is very encouraging.”

Grapes N Cream

This year, farmers grew a considerable amount of Grapes N Cream, the Cannarado variety. Phinest growers in Sacramento, California, sold the cutting to hundreds of farms, and Grapes N Cream became a veritable beast for the outdoor culture in 2023, with huge, dense, mold-resistant colas. The Grape Pie x Cookies N Cream cross makes it a cousin of Oreoz, which has had its own fame. Smokers enjoy its spectacular purple color, creamy grape and gas smell and taste, and its high THC indica effect that will get you stoned like a Xanax. And dabbers also benefit from it.

“This is a major concern today – finding varieties that can flower well and can also be produced without solvent,” said Nat Pennington of Humboldt Seed Co.

Gush Mints

Bred by Purple City Genetics of Oakland, Gush Mints did the same thing as Grapes N Cream. It ended up in everyone's garden, where it grew like a science experiment gone wrong and transformed into a vigorous 3-foot-high hedge, punctuated with 1,5-foot-long stems. .

Gush Mints is sticky, with sweeter kush and mint notes that appeal to casual smokers for very calming nighttime effects. This is even more true for the 1:1 version of Gush Mints, which contains equal parts THC and CBD. Gush Mints comes from Kush Mints x (F1 Durb x Gushers).

Lemon Cherry Gelato

Lemon Cherry Gelato

Pretty, mouth-watering, effective and undeniably sought-after, Lemon Cherry Gelato is the Taylor Swift of 2023 weed strains. Smokers should have their pick of some top-notch LCGs this fall, thanks to a huge harvest that's making buyers pickier .

The smell and taste of lemon, cherry, cream, and sweet berries, along with the indica-leaning hybrid effects, goes well with everything except work. LCG was High Times Strain of the Year 2022, and one of our finalists for Leafly Strain of the Year 2022. The Cookies brand's Humboldt Grown initiative offers a greenhouse- or light-grown Triple Scoop (Lemon Cherry x Gelato) that will hit California Cookies and Lemonnade dispensary shelves from October through December. Top growers Farmer and the Felon have PLCR (Platinum Runtz x Lemon Cherry Gelato).

Apple bananas

The most terrible thing we have seen so far in the outdoor growing is the cross Cookies' Blue Power x Gelatti, Apples and Bananas – another escape from indoor growing. Briceland Forest Farm's summer light-dep Apple & Banana maxes out at 4% terps for the season. This is 8 times the national average for aroma. Apples and Bananas gives off waves of apples, pears and tree fruits thicker than Nicki Minaj. It's strong, but not biting.

“Quickly your whole house will smell like this.”

Goodbye anxiety, stress and depression. Hello happiness, flight, excitement. And yes, Apple bananas are produced in open-ground, renewable plantations. We're seeing A+Bs and crosses from Seed707, as well as Phinest Ian's new brand of microcircuit clones Uncle Dad Vibes.

Blueberry cupcake

Every modern culture must have some “cakes” – wedding cake, ice cream cake, and now The Blueberry Cupcake. This is a cross between Bleuberry Muffin from the Humboldt Seed Company, which has proven itself, and Wedding Cake, the American favorite, which increases THC. Oh miracle, it worked. If you walk through the fields of the Sonoma Hills squeezing Blueberry Cupcake you will smell the authentic smell of blueberry and sweet butter cupcake.

Blueberry Cupcake's 50-50 hybrid effects pair with any activity, day or night. This cultivar is also popular outdoors and makes life easier for growers, says Joyce Cenali of Sonoma Hills Farm. Its leaf-bud ratio is very low, which makes work easier.

“It’s one of the easiest cultivars for us to manicure, that’s for sure.”

Cheetah Piss

OK – time for a weird one. The Cheetah Piss strain returns to the harvest list after a two-year hiatus. For what ? Because one of the best outdoor growers of all time, Ridgeline Farms of Southern Humboldt, CA, continues to grow it, and has absolutely torn up everything in its run.

“The Cheetah Piss grown by Ridgeline performed very well. From a production standpoint, it’s crazy,” said Nat of Humboldt Seed Co.

The Cheetah Piss brand brings together three leading strains – Lemonnade, Gelato 42 and London Poundcake 97. It has been available since 2019. Despite all the dessert genes, Cheetah Piss has some bite – users say it smells like ammonia, menthol and Ridge. This smell turns people on, with a sativa hybrid effect that excites them, makes them laugh and makes them happy. Cheetah Piss withstood the wet and cold first half of the year – it resisted powdery mildew and gave excellent results.

“Cheetah Piss is very powerful,” says Daniel Hendricks, of the influential HendRx nursery.

Adios MF

We expected to see a lot of crosses of Jealousy, Leafly's strain of the year 2022, and that's indeed what happened. Adios MF brought together (Biscotti x Sherb) x Jealousy f2 to create scents of candied lime, blueberry jam and marshmallow. It tastes like a bowl of fresh berries and cream with lime on top, with a powerful, uplifting body high that works with movies, relaxation, and sleep. Formerly an indoor strain, the Cookies brand took the Adios MF into their greenhouse this year and blew us away.

Blue dream

Blue Dream is once again leading the market in the Western United States, and it's not just vague copies of the Blue Dream or cleverly named editables playing with Google searches. According to observers, smokers are enjoying a veritable nostalgia trip this year.

“Overall, the classics are back: OG Kush, Blue Dream and Sour Diesel are in high demand and are planted harmoniously to meet the need,” Hendricks said.

From DJ Short Blueberry x Haze, Blue Dream emerged sui generis from the hot hills of Santa Cruz in the 90s. It's as '90s as a vintage Nirvana t-shirt, with a slight taste of blueberry and 50-50 hybrid effects that stop anxiety. When it’s done right, it’s awesome, delicious and smells great.

Blue Dream reached its peak in the early 2000s, when everyone was growing it and prices collapsed. Today, market-minded growers have replanted it, including Alpenglow, Raw Garden, Wave Rider Nursery, Lost Farm and yours truly. Smoakland Delivery sells 99 ounces of Blue Dream from Sonoma County. As pleasant to drink as a cold beer on a date, and just as popular, rediscover the Blue Dream.

Double OG Chem

This list has to have an OG Kush every year, so we choose Double OG Chem from Rebel Grown, which has received many well-deserved awards, it's fire. Just like large-scale industry leaders Farmer and The Felon. Double OG Chem sits in the middle of the Venn diagram of OG Kush, Chemdog and Sour Diesel. The gorgeous green buds exude a taste of lemon, lime, bubblegum and fuel with a powerful indica hybrid effect; perfect for a weekday happy hour or a lazy Sunday.

Sherb Haze

Elite grower Tina Gordon of Moon Made Farms in Humboldt isn't kidding. She has massive trees in Petaluma, California, and we couldn't leave her out. Sherb Haze comes from Conception Nurseries and brings together two obvious winners, Sherbert Bx1 x Neville's Haze, to produce cartoonishly sized rocket colas that would make SpaceX engineers drool. It smells hazy and sweet with lots of Sherbert body, more floral than creamy and fruity. Haze enhances the sedative effect of Sherbert, making it suitable for smoking throughout the day. This is the perfect example of something new that is similar to a product that people love. Roll big joints without the guilt of Sherb Haze in plein air.

Papaya Cross

f and f peach panther

To round out the list of outdoor strains, we wanted to include a top strain for hash lovers. They probably won't be surprised to learn that Papaya is back for another year to fuel all rosin or resin dabs. We don't know the exact breeder or lineage – some say Papaya was renamed Green Crack. But we do know that it smells and tastes like papaya, has the effects of an indica hybrid, and produces trichomes for making hash.

Alpenglow Farm has produced a rare Papaya Berry Runtz (Strawberry Runtz x Papaya Bomb) that updates the classic Papaya with creamier berries. Farmer and the Felon has had good results with Peach Panther (Peaches x Papaya Bomb) from Purple City Genetics. Expect to see many small batches of papaya crosses. Connoisseur smokers are getting bored faster than ever, which is why growers and stores have started spinning up new remixes. Alpenglow's batch of Papaya Berry Runtz for Solful totals just 3 to 5 pounds, or 384 8-ounce jars. So don't miss the boat.

Sour Lemon MAC

We end with something that will delight fans of Jack Herer, the best-selling variety at Solful in 2023, although it is 30 years old. More specifically, Sour Lemon MAC from Happy Dreams Genetics has a very high terpene content (terpinolene), the main terpene in Jack Herer. Sour Lemon MAC contains 1,44% terpinolene and 3,71% total terpenes. This is almost 7 times more than the national average for aroma. Super Lemon MAC also has weird parents. It's (Mother's Milk x Lemon Blueberry) x MAC and Cheese. It's excellent.

Tons of OGs are growing OGs, so don't miss Farmer and the Felon's harvest, as well as Ridgeline's Lambo OG, Biovortex's Banana Cherry Lime Dog from Sonoma Hills Farm, and LSD (Lemon Sour Diesel) from Blimburn Seeds grown by Swami Select.
